A current guide to the Sevenoaks roadworks and travel disruption in June 2026: A25 Westerham Road weekend closures over the A21, M25 Junction 5 repairs after a lorry crash, and the lift outage at Sevenoaks station, with what it means for you.

If you drive or commute around Sevenoaks, the next few weekends are going to need some planning. A run of National Highways works around the A21, fresh repairs on the M25 at Junction 5 after a lorry crash, and a long running lift fault at Sevenoaks station are all live right now. Here is what is closed, when, and what it means for getting to work, the school run or a weekend away.

A25 Westerham Road: weekend closures over the A21 until late summer

The headline for local drivers is the A25 Westerham Road at Bessels Green, where it crosses over the A21. Because of National Highways works, Kent County Council has made an order to prohibit westbound traffic on that stretch of the A25 from 18 May 2026 right through to 31 August 2026, or until the work is finished, according to the public notice for the closures.

The closures are not continuous. The pattern runs as overnight and weekend shifts: an initial run of overnight closures between 20:00 and 06:00 in mid May, followed by full 24 hour weekend closures from Friday evening to Monday morning. That includes the weekend of Friday 5 June at 20:00 through to Monday 8 June at 06:00, with further weekend and overnight closures continuing through the summer. National Highways has said it is planning more work at this location in July and August 2026.

When the A25 is shut westbound over the A21, the signed diversion sends drivers down the A21 southbound to Morleys Roundabout and back, according to the published notice. In practice that adds time and funnels traffic through Bessels Green and the Riverhead area, so allow extra minutes if you are heading west towards Westerham or the M25 on a closure weekend.

M25 Junction 5: emergency repairs after a lorry crash

The M25 at Junction 5, the Sevenoaks junction where the motorway meets the M26 and the A21, has been a second pressure point. In the early hours of Saturday 30 May, an HGV hit the central reservation on the clockwise carriageway and spilled a large quantity of diesel, forcing the closure of Junction 5 just before the exit slip towards the M26.

National Highways confirmed the closure on the day, with the M25 clockwise shut at Junction 5 after the lorry hit the central reservation and caused a large diesel spillage. Emergency resurfacing was needed because of the spill, and barrier damage had to be assessed before the road could be made fully safe, as reported by KentOnline.

There was a knock on effect for the diversion too. The standard diversion route could not be used because of the ongoing A25 works near Chipstead, so drivers were instead sent five miles south on the A21 to Morleys Roundabout and back north to rejoin the M25 at Junction 5. If you are using Junction 5 over the coming days, check live conditions before you set off, as recovery and repair work after incidents like this can run on for a while.

Sevenoaks station: lifts out of order on the footbridge

It is not only the roads. At Sevenoaks station, the lifts between platforms 3 and 4 and the station footbridge have been out of order since 17:00 on 7 May 2026, and Southeastern has them listed as out of service “until further notice” on its service disruption page.

For anyone who needs step free access, that is a real problem at one of the busiest commuter stations in west Kent. Southeastern points passengers to the nearest step free alternatives instead: Tonbridge and Chelsfield for Southeastern services, and Otford for Thameslink. If you use a wheelchair, travel with a buggy or simply cannot manage the footbridge stairs, it is worth planning around those stations until the lifts are fixed, and you can request assistance through Southeastern in advance.

Other local streetworks to watch

A handful of smaller Kent County Council jobs have also been touching the town centre. The public notice portal lists a gas connection closure on Bradbourne Road outside number 48, and turning restrictions at the Buckhurst Avenue and Suffolk Way junction for a new water main connection, both around mid to late May, per the Sevenoaks traffic notices. These are short jobs, but on narrow town centre roads they can still cause local queues at peak times.

What it means for you

The practical takeaways for the next few weeks:

  • If you travel west on the A25 over the A21 at weekends, expect closures and the A21 to Morleys Roundabout diversion. Build in extra time or go earlier.
  • Around the M25 at Junction 5, check live traffic before any clockwise journey, as repair work after the 30 May crash can still affect lanes and slip roads.
  • Wheelchair users and anyone needing step free access at Sevenoaks station should plan to use Tonbridge, Chelsfield or Otford while the footbridge lifts are out.
  • For up to the minute conditions, the National Highways daily closure report and the Southeastern journey planner are the official live sources to check on the day.

Closures and dates can change at short notice. National Highways advises drivers to check its daily closures page or the Traffic England website for the latest before setting off.
